Tuxedos:Their History, When and How to Wear Them

The first time I came across the tuxedo was at my high school graduation and at the time I felt penguin dress . Shortly afterwards, in English classes, my teacher used the play to refer to English words used in Portuguese, but which were different in English itself, because in the USA the play is called tuxedo .

Years went by and, finally, studying a little more about the world of fashion, I discovered exactly what the garment was and what it was for and, what’s more, the correct way to wear it.

Firstly, the garment was created in England in 1860 and there it’s called a tuxedo, so we copied the English and we’re not wrong. My English teacher was saying that the correct word was tuxedo and we use a totally different English word to designate the garment. Anyway…

O smoking jacket was created in 1860 so that guys could smoke their cigars without the smoke impregnating the rest of their clothes, hence the elongated cut and design of the garment.

Just an addendum, in the USA it’s called Tuxedo because the first guy who appeared wearing this type of garment there was in a club called Tuxedo .

How to wear a tuxedo?

In Brazil, tuxedos are often worn at graduation parties, debutante balls and wedding parties. What nobody realizes is that it cannot be a wedding dress code. Tradition dictates that grooms should not wear tuxedos to religious ceremonies.

The ideal color is black. However, in Brazil daring young people have opted for wine, blue and other very different colors. The boldness doesn’t stop there. It also draws attention to fabrics ranging from velvet to denim.

But when would it be ideal to wear a tuxedo?

At black tie events. With a box or vest, but never both together.

If you opt for a sash, it should be on your stomach and never let your shirt show. Always wear black socks and shoes (never white socks and sneakers).

The pocket handkerchief is always the same color as the sash.

The jacket needs to have wider lapels, which may or may not be made of a different material such as silk or satin.

Around here we often wear it with a bow tie, but it can be worn with a normal tie or even without one. Anyone who chooses to wear a tie should know that it must be the same color as the scarf and sash. ALWAYS.

If you love casinos, you can also opt for tuxedos, as they are very suitable for gambling fans. Ready to wear a tuxedo and find out why they have that name?

What's your reaction?
